Published by The Alchemist? 1 month, 2 weeks ago in Asides and Computer. ClosedThis morning we suddenly couldn’t get our telephone to dial nor keep a dialtone. I was pulling my hair out trying to get the telephone to work.
I finally got on the internet, brought up our VoIP provider’s website and found out that the VoIP provider’s database was corrupted.
I tried to do the changes suggested [...]

Published by The Alchemist? 1 month, 3 weeks ago in Blog/Website. ClosedToday updated ‘Vietnamzen.com’ WordPress code to the latest version, removed outdated Vietnam pictures from 2006 and removed outdated categories and comments.
This is an interim step until we arrive in Hue, Vietnam where I will have more time to upload new Vietnam pictures, reactivate the photo gallery and probably add some new functionality.
Looks like we will [...]
First Post from AMD 64×2 System Running Ubuntu 6.1 [Linux]
Published by The Alchemist? 1 year, 10 months ago in Blog/Website, Computer and Vietnam. 2 CommentsBehind the scenes, I’ve been struggling to learn Linux. I want to move away from Microsoft WinXP toward open source Linux software.
First I tried openSUSE v10.2 but the transfer speeds were too slow because they didn’t have a server in Vietnam, only China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia. However, Ubuntu has [...]
Resurrected Motherboard
Published by The Alchemist? 1 year, 12 months ago in Computer and Vietnam. ClosedSince my AMD motherboard/CPU died several months ago and the local computer store told me the motherboard was burnt out due to the electrical problems, I have struggled with the decision of whether to buy another motherboard/CPU here.
When the lower 1/3 of my laptop screen failed (and now stays white all the time), I called [...]
Can’t find a 3-prong electrical extension cord
Published by The Alchemist? 1 year, 12 months ago in Computer and Vietnam. ClosedBrought my computer over here from Washington and set it up. I noticed some not-so-mild shocks when I touched the case, but didn’t know exactly what action to take.
Sometime before three months here, the computer failed. I took it to the computer store and they got it running again. After a day [...]

Mai had a [...]
I never would have believed what it took to obtain non-counterfeit DVDs here in Vietnam.
About a month ago, I walked into several computer shops here in Hue and asked the price of DVDs. The shop personnel looked at me like I was crazy and told me they didn’t have any DVDs in [...]

ClosedAfter a complete day of frustation (not being able to debug Ruby on Rails application, I had a “Eureka moment”. I didn’t need a full-feature IDE debugger as much as I needed to change my pattern of developing software to include “behavior testing.”

My STUPIDITY almost makes me cry!
Published by The Alchemist? 2 years, 4 months ago in Blog/Website, Computer and Vietnam. 1 CommentThe motherboard and CPU which I brought here from the US is dead! Killed by NOT being grounded! …. I then told Mai how my stupidity had ruined $200-$300 of my computer equipment — motherboard, CPU and probably memory. I almost cried from my stupidity.
Success, I finally did it! Come take a look!
Published by The Alchemist? 2 years, 4 months ago in Blog/Website, Computer and This'n'That. ClosedI finally succeeded in:
- being able to choose which pictures I want to include/exclude from the sidebar photo sideshow.
- adding a caption below the picture which uses the EXIF info stored in the picture (JPG) itself.
